Volcanoes

Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda's northwest, 160 sq km, protects mountain gorillas and diverse biodiversity. It nestles in the Virunga Mountains with active volcanoes.

Overview

Volcanoes National Park, situated in the northwest corner of Rwanda, is a land of both natural beauty and profound conservation significance. This 160 square kilometer park is celebrated for its role in safeguarding the critically endangered mountain gorillas, a species passionately championed by renowned conservationist Dian Fossey. Nestled among the Virunga Mountains, the park is home to not only these magnificent gorillas but also a remarkable array of biodiversity, including three active and six dormant volcanoes along the borders of Uganda and Congo.

A Haven for Mountain Gorillas

Volcanoes National Park rose to prominence largely due to the tireless conservation efforts of Dian Fossey, who dedicated her life to protecting the mountain gorillas residing in this protected sanctuary. Today, it stands as one of the most crucial strongholds for these gentle giants.

A World of Adventure and Conservation

Volcanoes National Park offers an array of captivating activities and experiences for visitors:
