Bwindi Impenetrable

Discover Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a 321 sq km treasure in Uganda's west, famed for mountain gorillas and hosting 350+ bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics. Nature awaits!

Overview

Situated in the western part of Uganda lies Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a treasure trove of natural wonders covering a sprawling 321 square kilometers. This ecologically diverse tropical forest, part of the Albertine Rift Valley, boasts an impressive array of flora and fauna, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. While Bwindi is renowned for its thriving population of mountain gorillas, it’s also home to over 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Among the Greater Virunga highlands’ four national parks offering mountain gorilla tracking experiences, Bwindi stands out with the highest number of habituated gorilla families—19 in total. In comparison, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park has 10, and Congo’s Virunga National Park has 8. An added advantage of Bwindi is its more affordable gorilla trekking permits, priced at $700, unlike the recent price hike in Volcanoes National Park to $1,500.

To ensure effective park management, Bwindi is divided into four zones, each housing at least four gorilla families: Ruhija, Nkuringo, Rushaga, and Buhoma. Each zone offers a unique experience due to varying altitudes, ranging from 1,160 meters to 2,607 meters above sea level. Ruhija, in particular, presents a challenging trek with its rugged terrain of V-shaped valleys and steep slopes.

As of the May 2018 census, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to over 450 resident gorillas, drawn to the abundance of edible vegetation and fruits. These gentle giants, weighing between 68 to 181 kilograms, are five times stronger than the average human. Despite their incredible power, gorillas are peaceful creatures, ensuring a safe and memorable encounter during your visit.

During your expedition with us, you’ll have the opportunity to visit a gorilla family comprising members of different age brackets—blackbacks, silverbacks, mothers, babies, and juveniles. This allows you to witness the fascinating evolution of gorillas’ physical characteristics as they mature. You’ll also observe the males’ protective nature towards females and infants, as gorillas live in a patriarchal society led by a dominant alpha male, the Silverback.

Birdwatching in Bwindi Forest

For avid birdwatchers, Bwindi offers an extraordinary experience. With over 340 recorded species thriving in bamboo patches, montane forests, and marshes, you’re guaranteed to leave with a radiant smile. Mubwindi, a montane swamp after which the park is named, is a prime birdwatching area. Here, you can spot species like the Shining-blue kingfisher, Yellow-eye black-flycatcher, Grauer’s broadbill, Lagden’s Bush-shrike, and many more. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars, as most birds prefer the canopy to access the warmth of the sun.

Exploring Bwindi: Activities and Adventures

Aside from gorilla tracking and birdwatching, Bwindi offers an array of activities to enhance your adventure:

  • Nature Walks from Buhoma: Explore the beauty of the forest through various nature walks that allow you to encounter primates and forest bird species, including unique endemics.
  • Waterfall Trail: Embark on the 2-kilometer trail leading to a spectacular 33-meter-high waterfall, a three-hour journey. Other trails, such as the Rushara Hill Trail and Mazubiro Loop Trail, offer breathtaking views of the Virunga ranges.
  • Village Walks: Immerse yourself in local culture with walks that introduce you to the Batwa, the indigenous forest-dwelling people, and the Bakiga. Participate in cultural experiences like coffee making, traditional medicine, and cultural performances.
  • Batwa Visits: Explore the traditional forest life of the Batwa on a day-long adventure that includes a visit to Garama Cave, offering powerful acoustics for song and music performances.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi

To maximize your gorilla tracking experience without disruptions from rain, the best times to visit are the relatively dry seasons from June to August and December to February. During these periods, the gorilla tracking trails are drier and less slippery.
