A Canoe Trip On Lake Bunyonyi

When you think of Uganda, picturesque landscapes and serene lakes might not be the first images that come to mind. However, in the southwest corner of the country lies Lake Bunyonyi, renowned for its breathtaking scenery, rich cultural history, and relaxing environment. For those looking to explore the area in a more intimate and adventurous way, a canoe trip on Lake Bunyonyi is an unbeatable choice. The canoe trip allows you to explore the lake’s lush surroundings, visit its islands, and experience a variety of exciting activities all while soaking in the culture of local communities.

Lake Bunyonyi is not just a natural wonder; it also carries deep historical and cultural significance. The lake comprises a flooded river valley which extends to about 25Km long and is not more than 5km wide. The lake was formed through volcanic activity about 8000 years ago, when Lava flow blocked off River Ndego in present day Muko to create a natural dam. Its name, Bunyonyi, translates to “place of many little birds,” attesting to the many weaver colonies on its shore as well as diverse birdlife that inhabits the area. The lake sits at approximately 1,962 meters (6,434 feet) above sea level and is 45m deep, making it the second-deepest lake in Africa, after Lake Tanganyika. The lake is encompassed by terraced fields and rolling hills, offering stunning views that enhance the overall experience for visitors. The indigenous communities, particularly the Bakiga and Batwa people, play a vital role in the lake’s cultural fabric. Their customs, music, and traditions add to the rich experience tourists can immerse themselves in while visiting.

A Glimpse of the Islands of Lake Bunyonyi

One of the main attractions of Lake Bunyonyi is its 29 islands, each boasting unique histories and features. Exploring these islands usually done using a dugout canoe allows visitors to appreciate the beauty and cultural significance of the lake fully. Each island serves as a unique destination, inviting visitors to explore their history, culture, and natural beauty. Some of the most reknowned Islands of Lake Bunyonyi Include:

Akampene Island: Also known as “Punishment Island,” this small island donned by a solitary dead tree in its centre, holds a dark historical significance. In traditional Bakiga society, a young woman was only supposed to get pregnant after marriage. Marrying off a virgin daughter meant receiving bride price, mostly paid with livestock. So, an unmarried pregnant girl was seen as not only bringing shame to the family, but robbing it of much-needed wealth. To deter such behaviour, families dumped pregnant girls on Punishment Island, leaving them there to either swim across the lake (a task insurmountable as swimming skills were rare), starve to death or in one in a million chances be rescued by a man not able to afford bride price. Thankfully this gruesome practice was outlawed by the missionaries in the 19th century. Today, the island stands as a stark reminder of history and offers stunning views of the surrounding lake and hills.

Bushara Island: This island is a popular spot for tourism development and offers several lodges and campsites. Visitors can relax, swim, and enjoy bonfires while being surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. Bird watching is also excellent here, with many avian species flitting about.

Bwama Island: This is the largest island on the Lake best known to many as the Island where Dr. Leonard Sharp of British descent established a leprosy colony where he treated refugees from Kigezi in 1926. When leprosy was eradicated from Kigezi in 1960, the colony stopped its operations in 1969. The island is known for its mission hospital, school and handicraft center for the disabled. Visitors can explore the remnants of the hospital and learn about its significant role in the community’s health care history.

Njoro Island: Known for its beautiful landscapes and community interactions, Njoro Island welcomes visitors who want to engage in local traditions. You can participate in craft-making sessions and learn about the local lifestyle.
