To deter such behaviour, families dumped pregnant girls on Punishment Island, leaving them there to either swim across the lake (a task insurmountable as swimming skills were rare), starve to death or in one in a million chances be rescued by a man not able to afford bride price. Thankfully this gruesome practice was outlawed by the missionaries in the 19th century.
