Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Established in 1898, Entebbe Botanical Gardens holds the distinction of being one of the oldest botanical gardens in Africa. Located 1.5 Km along the shore line of Lake Victoria, this 40.7-hectare garden with lush lawns and seemingly ageless gigantic trees was established as the country’s first agricultural research unit to assemble and test products such as cotton, rubber, cocoa, tea, coffee and spices as key contributors to the country’s’ economy.  The gardens boasts over 500 plant species, 389 of which are higher plants. The plants are characterized as indigenous and exotic fruits, medicinal, beverage, spices, ornamentals, timber, oils and several endangered plant species. As you wander through the winding pathways, you’ll encounter towering mahogany trees, graceful palms, and fragrant eucalyptus groves. The air is filled with the musical chirping of birds, and the gentle rustle of leaves provides a soothing sound that is a stark contract to the noises in the city. Make sure to look out for resident wildlife, including colorful butterflies, playful monkeys, and a variety of bird species that call the gardens home.
